Farewell

The V.O.C. was tired of Mauritius now. They described it as “useless and unproductive.” This time, they decided that they would abandon it for good. Abraham Mamber Van der Velde became the last governor. His task was to evacuate the population to South Africa. Which he did, but it was difficult. The people could only be sent there by boat, and they could not be sent at the same time. Van der Velde had to listen to their complaints about quite a few days. It was not enjoyable in the least.

When all settlers had gone, he set fire to the Fort and destroyed all the constructions. He left with the rest of the soldiers in 1710, leaving way for others to conquer Mauritius.
